Do you like to work in a social, busy environment? There are shifts available every day in our kitchen!
Volunteering in our meal service program means helping to prepare, serve, and clean-up afterwards. We serve breakfast (7am – 9:30am), lunch (11am – 1:30pm), and dinner (4pm – 6:30pm). Weekend/Holiday shifts are brunch from 10am – 12:30pm and dinner at 3pm – 5:30pm. This is a great role if you are interested in helping out but need flexibility in the schedule.

Note: A young person between ages of 12 – 18 years must apply with a guardian as a group.

Helping prepare and package sandwiches is a great way to serve! The roughly 1400 sandwiches made daily are distributed throughout Edmonton on the Hope Mission Rescue Van, at the Tegler Youth Centre, and at our Emergency Shelters. “Sandwiches”, as it is fondly known, runs from 10am – 12pm on weekdays, excluding holidays.

Everyday many generous supporters donate to Hope Mission. You can apply to help sort the donations received. Hygiene items, clothing, and non-perishable foods are all brought to the Hope Mission Warehouse. Volunteers go through donations and direct them to their proper location. This role is available Mondays and Thursdays, from 9am – 1pm, and from 1pm – 5pm. This position is located at our Hope Mission Warehouse (7011 Girard Road NW).

The Hope Mission Bargain Shoppe is a thrift store that sells gently used items to support the programs at Hope Mission. Bargain Shoppe volunteers help staff maintain a welcoming store front. Things like setting up displays, tidying, and product sorting are all parts of this volunteer role! If you enjoy organization, creating displays, and welcoming shoppers, this role is for you!

For special events, we serve Thanksgiving, Easter, and four Christmas meals every year to our guests. If you are interested in serving any of the holiday meals, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator directly.

The Hope Mission Rescue Van operates 24/7 to help reach people in need of anything from food and clothing, to a listening ear and prayer. Volunteers who have been approved to help on the Rescue Van help hand out food and water, as well as connect with community in two faith-based roles. Our Community Support role is a ministry-minded approach to building relationships with those we serve through meeting basic needs and support on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday from 8am – 12pm. The Crisis Diversion role runs on Wednesday/Friday/Sunday from 8pm – 12am. Crisis Diversion entails assisting staff who are responding to calls through partner agencies. To be considered for this volunteer position, a current police check and in-person interview are required.

Note: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age to volunteer?

Youth between the ages of 12 and 17 are eligible to volunteer as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Volunteers that wish to serve at the Tegler Youth Centre or in our emergency shelters must be at least 18 years old.

What is the required commitment?

Most shifts are between 3 – 4 hours. Volunteers that serve meals, help in the emergency shelters, or sort donations do not need to commit to a regular schedule. Once volunteers are approved for those areas, they have access to an online schedule that will allow them to see open shifts and book themselves in accordingly. Volunteers for the Tegler Youth Centre need to commit to a regular commitment.

Can I drop in to volunteer?

We do not allow drop in volunteers to ensure that everyone is provided orientation information and our schedule is balanced. Please fill out an online application form if you are interested in volunteering or accompanying a current volunteer.

Can I volunteer for the holidays?

Holiday volunteering shifts are opened three months in advance. These tend to book up extremely quickly, so be sure to apply early!

Do I need a criminal record check?

Every volunteer opportunity requires a criminal record check for those 18 years of age and over. Criminal record checks with vulnerable sector and interviews are required for volunteers who want to serve in the emergency shelter, on the Rescue Van, or at the Tegler Youth Centre (which also requires Child Welfare Check).

Do you take volunteers who need to complete community service?

Yes, based on availability. Please fill out an application form and indicate the number of hours you need to complete. The volunteer administrator will contact you to confirm if you have been approved.

What is the maximum group size?

Our maximum group size is 12 people. There is no minimum size for groups! For youth groups, we require one adult for every 3 – 4 youth.

Is there a cost if our group wants to serve a meal?

There is no financial obligation to our volunteers. If you would like to contribute to the cost of the meal financially, that would be fantastic! However, it is not a requirement.
