Children in Calgary are coming to school hungry unlike any other time
Right now, up to 60% of children are coming to school with no food in several of the Calgary schools we’ve partnered with. Tragically, many of them won’t even show up at all because of the embarrassment of coming to school hungry.
The pandemic pushed low-income families further into poverty and now, historic inflation is making it even more challenging for struggling families to access healthy meals. The need for food and stable support is absolutely critical so that kids can get the nutrition they need to learn and grow.
Already, we are seeing many new children coming to school hungry this year. A young girl named Leah has shown up several times without any food.
When Leah opens her fridge, it is completely empty -— there is nothing inside. Leah’s mom does the best she can, but it is hard with limited resources. Her recently-diagnosed medical condition has made it even more challenging. With increased costs of food, she can no longer afford fresh fruits and vegetables, and the meals Leah gets at Hope Mission are sometimes the only meals she gets.

Leah is only in Grade Three. Like many other struggling children in Calgary, the pain and challenges of food insecurity start so young. They urgently need your help.
