A Call To Prayer: Part Four

Pray that children and youth would walk in courage today

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” As we were playing a game of pingpong I asked the question hoping to go deeper with Tom. His response was short and to the point with not even a moment of hesitation: “A drug dealer.” I swallowed my surprise and continued the conversation wanting to know why this bright, energetic, and happy teen was so sure of a dark future. Tom went on to explain how that was what his family did. He share about family members who were spending time in prison, another relative who was stabbed, and how the obvious next step for his future was joining in the family business.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10, NLT

Tom’s story is not unlike many of the children and youth that attend Hope Mission programs. The obvious future is laid out for them at a young age and without a courageous and intentional decision to choose another way forward youth like Tom will follow the path that his family has shown him. The freedom that God offers may come at a cost to kids like Tom.

There are many stories of individuals who experienced God’s call in their life to leave behind the old ways and to take a courageous step into a new way of life. Stories like Matthew, the tax collector, leaving behind his career of greed and corruption to follow Jesus. Like Rahab, who risked her life to protect the Israelite spies and was given freedom and protection for not only her, but her entire family. Like Paul, who persecuted the early believers, and after encountering Christ on the way to Damascus chose to live out the rest of his days sharing the good news of Jesus. The decision to walk in a new path is not an easy one but God promises He is with us each step of the way.
