Summer is here and I get very excited for the warm weather – to be outside and to be in the sun! I love walking around in my neighbourhood and smelling the scent of barbeques, hearing children playing outside, and feeling the warmth of the sun around me.

Summer is a time for everyone to come out of hibernation. It is an interesting sight to watch all of Edmonton emerge from the winter when the weather gets warmer.

I see this the most downtown around Hope Mission. In the winter, there seems to be less people around until we reach our meal time and then we get to see our guests and welcome them into our warm building. However, in the summer, the traffic outside of our building is buzzing all day long. More people will choose to sleep outside, so the few areas of grass away from the edge of the road around our building become busier with makeshift shelters. There is a lot of activity outside as the weather is beautiful and it draws people outside.

Summer is a season when people experiencing homelessness are more visible and it is also the time that donations are the lowest we have all year.

The summer is a great time to take a break – school is taking a break, vacation time is used up, and the sun is out longer. Everyone deserves a break and to enjoy summer, but it is reality for our guests downtown that they cannot take a break from their lives.

Homelessness doesn’t take a break.

It is good for everyone to take a break, but let’s remember this summer the people who don’t get a break from their lives, their problems, and their addictions.

Challenge your children to continue to think about the people who don’t have the means to go on a holiday or vacation somewhere this summer.

Challenge your children to think of one thing they can do this summer to help the people in need in their city.
